According to official media reports on Thursday, Pakistan’s Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has discovered significant gas reserves in the region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that may produce 2.14 million cubic feet per day (MCFD).
The finding is an important step in increasing Pakistan’s energy independence and is a component of the Special Investment Facilitation Council’s natural resource exploration initiatives. “Up to 2.14 MCFD could be produced from the reserves, which would help with energy self-sufficiency and promote more exploration in the mining sector,” Radio Pakistan said.
Pakistan has long relied on gas and oil imports to satisfy its energy needs, but it is now experiencing increasing difficulties because of declining domestic resources and trouble obtaining expensive foreign gas.
In a parallel move, the China Central Depository and Clearing Company and the OGDCL inked a deal in October to investigate and exploit Pakistan’s tight gas deposits. Although it needs sophisticated extraction methods, this unconventional resource—which is located in low-permeability reservoir rocks like sandstone—has enormous potential to increase domestic energy output.
The finding emphasizes how crucial it is to use Pakistan’s undeveloped natural resources to satisfy its energy demands and spur economic growth.
