KP’s Chief Minister succeeds Governor as Chancellor of Public Sector Universities

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administration has declared that the Chief Minister has been appointed Chancellor of all public universities, replacing the Governor.

According to a notice from the KP Assembly Secretariat, from now on, the Chief Minister shall appoint Vice-Chancellors (VCs) at all public sector institutions.

The KP government has proposed a law to restructure university management. Following the assembly’s adoption of the law, the Chief Minister has replaced the Governor as Chancellor of all public universities. The Chief Minister will also appoint Vice-Chancellors (VCs), delegating further authority to the provincial government.

The chief minister will continue to have the ability to designate vice-chancellors, and the academic search committee will recommend three choices to the chief minister. The measure extends the vice-chancellor’s tenure to four years.

The tenure of the VCs will be subject to review by the government’s monitoring committee, which will examine the performance of the vice chancellor and may terminate the tenure if performance falls below 65 percent.

According to the amendment bill 2024, vice chancellors in women’s institutions will be all women.
