The Trump administration’s plans to detain or deport Imran Ahmed, CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), have been temporarily halted by a federal judge.
Ahmed is one of five researchers and regulators whose work on internet misinformation and abuse has infuriated the U.S. State Department, which said this week that they are prohibited from entering the nation, according to the New York Times.
These people, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, are “radical activists and weaponized NGOs” who have “organized efforts to force American platforms to censor, demonetize, and silence viewpoints they oppose.”
Ahmed, who is in a vulnerable situation, is protected by the judge’s ruling. Despite being born in the United Kingdom, he resides in the United States, has an American wife and kid, and has a U.S. green card.
Ahmed described the government’s measures as “another example of companies like Meta, OpenAI, and Elon Musk’s X trying to avoid responsibility by using their financial influence to sway politics” in an interview with PBS News.
