Tanweer Ahmed, an American-Pakistani business billionaire, has given a generous $9 million (about Rs2.5 billion) contribution to Islamabad’s National University of Science & Technology (NUST) to help underprivileged students gain access to excellent education through scholarships.
NUST has officially declared that Ahmed has established an Endowment Fund for financially underprivileged students in collaboration with the institution. This project is intended to help almost 200 students each year by offering exceptional scholarship possibilities. The $9 million contribution is one of the largest by an expatriate Pakistani to any university in Pakistan.
In an interview with Geo News, Ahmed discussed his aspirations to expand this scholarship program outside NUST and make it a permanent fixture. A formal ceremony to officially begin the scholarship program is slated for next month at NUST Islamabad, with participation from key Pakistani dignitaries.
The Houston-based businessman stressed that the Higher Education Commission (HEC) will grant scholarships to worthy students on a yearly basis. Scholarships will be awarded solely on the basis of merit, with a focus on students who face financial barriers to obtaining a high-quality, costly education.
