Punjab has set a sugar restriction of 5kg per ID card during Ramadan.

The Punjab government is giving 5 kilos of sugar per ID card for one month at a cost of Rs130 per kilogram at Ramadan relief bazaars set up around the state.

However, the Punjab government’s Ramadan assistance project has been criticized for limiting sugar distribution to only five kilos per ID card, which people believe is insufficient for bigger families throughout Ramadan.
The system, which monitors purchases via ID card registrations, is designed to prevent duplicate transactions. However, many contend that the five-kilogram restriction is insufficient to satisfy the demands of an ordinary household during the holy month of Ramadan.

Arif Gujjar, President of the Kiryana Merchant Association, criticized the increased sugar prices, pointing out that sugar costs Rs170 per kilogram on the open market. He cautioned that cartel-like actions among sugar mills and traders might cause prices to climb much more.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari defended the government’s decision, noting that 80 Ramadan bazaars were established across the province, including 10 in Lahore, to ensure sugar is supplied at the reduced rate of Rs130 per kilogram. She explained that the purpose was to bring relief throughout the holy month.

Model bazaars sell sugar for Rs140 per kilogram, with no limitations on quantity.
